This most unusual lure was the brainchild of Richard Keith of Harker's Island, North Carolina. An avid fisherman, Keith spent many a day in the waters just below the famed Outer Banks and off the shores of the Shackleford Banks, a barrier island populated by wild horses. Keith had noted the large amount of flying insects that were unique to the banks, drawn there by a plentiful food supply left, er... behind by the horses. He had also noted many Mullets leaping from the waters to snag these feast-filled flies and the idea of an insect-inspired lure sent him back home to his workshop to get started. Being a glass artist in his free time, Keith fashioned the prototype for the Hatteras Hornet out of beautiful colored glass with a jewel-encrusted side plate and brass wing-spoon. The lure was a sure-fire and Pfleeger's scouts quickly snapped up the design from Keith. The prototype for this lure sits proudly in the lobby of the McFinn Museum today.
